Cheers erupted from spectators in the Quantico Middle/High School gym on Sept. 9, 2013, as the Lady Warriors, Quantico varsity girls’ volleyball team, scored repeatedly against the Emmanuel Christian School Flames, from Manassas.

The undefeated Quantico Lady Warriors took their positions on the court as they prepared to begin their fourth game of the season and defend their unscathed record.

“Our serving is one of our team strengths,” said Robert Hume, Lady Warriors’ head coach. “We usually defend really, really well, too.”

Hume’s insight was proven to be accurate through the consistent, fast-paced, well-placed serving of Doneisha, junior, and Marquis, senior, which led them to a victory of 25-10 in the first set.

“Our cohesion helped us win today,” said Marquis. “We get along. Even when we are not playing well, we know how to pick each other up.”

Although Hume also noted the team could have played better, the outcome of the final two matches still left the visiting Flames trailing by 21 combined points.

“Monday games are tough,” said Hume. “But we have a good bunch of girls, and they are working hard.”

Although the Flames lost the game, Alina Burton, Flames coach, still had some positive things to say.

“We knew it was going to be a tough match and our girls were prepared to play their best,” said Burton. “We always enjoy playing Quantico because of their good sportsmanship. Hopefully next time it will be more of a competition.”

The Lady Warriors will play 13 games before facing the Flames again for the last game of the regular season on Oct. 24, 2013.

Until then, the 14-member team will focus on winning games by working hard and using their starting lineup of veteran players.

“Last year, we played in the conference championship game and lost,” said Hume. “We hope to do the same thing, only win this year.”

Monique agrees.

“Winning the conference and being champions would be very fulfilling,” said Monique. “I’d also like to see our freshman and sophomores carry on the momentum next year.”
