MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, VA -- Families, friends and residents gathered to fish and enjoy the outdoors during a Community Day at Lunga Park, MCB Quantico, June 6.
The event, hosted by Marine Corps Community Services in partnership with Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs, brought people together to cast connections while fishing for free.
“These days it's very important to have face-to-face connections with other people,” said Hannah Arfaoui, commercial sponsorship and special events coordinator for MCCS MCB Quantico. “Even something simple like shaking a hand or sharing a bag of chips can make a connection.”
The event also hosted a fishing tournament, provided free food, and hosted vendors for patrons.
“We have a bunch of awesome military businesses and programs out here today,” said Arfaoui. “These businesses help sponsor events like this so we can form those connections with the people around us.”
As the event came to an end, guests enjoyed a variety of food and gathered around a campfire for s’mores, creating a setting for the community to cast connections even after fishing.
Throughout the event, MCCS highlighted programs and services, giving attendees the chance to learn about the wide range of recreational, family and support opportunities available on MCB Quantico.
“Events like this make people more aware of the things they have access to on the base,” said Steve Surls, Lunga Park manager. “It gives people the opportunity to experience places like Lunga Park.”
Programs by MMCS can provide those looking for activities with outdoor adventures, youth sports and special events, alongside staple services like Semper Fit, the Single Marine Program and Military Family Life Counseling.
