The United Services Automobile Association (USAA) and the Washington Commanders hosted the USAA’s National Football League (NFL) Salute to Service Boot Camp at the Washington Commanders Training Camp in Ashburn, Virginia, Aug. 16, 2022.

Approximately 50 service members from Marine Corps Base Quantico, Naval District Washington and Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling were invited to exclusive access to meet players, get autographs, and watch the Washington Commanders practice.

“For me, it’s just appreciating everybody for coming out,” said Kendall Fuller, professional football cornerback for the Washington Commanders. “A lot of times, people just want to come out to watch us and get signatures. This is just an appreciation for them coming out.”

Service members then joined the NFL players on the field, running through football drills similar to those used to evaluate NFL talent, also known as the NFL Combine. This included military members competing in the 40-yard dash, three-cone shuttle, vertical jump, and receiving and quarterback passing.

“The Marines had a once in a lifetime opportunity meet up with an NFL team,” said Shelly Chapman, MCCS Marketing Director. “Not only that, the Marines were able to show that they are able to compete and showcase what it’s like to be a Marine.”

The purpose of the USAA’s Salute to Service Boot Camp is to honor, empower, and connect our nation’s service members, veterans, and their families, and to show support and appreciation for the military community.
