Civilian Education Programs

You can get a degree or certification almost free through civilian education programs

There are a plethora of civilian training and education programs available aboard Quantico.  Following is a summary of some of those opportunities:

The Academic Degree Program

This program allows appropriated fund civilians, and veterans who have already exhausted their GI Bill benefits, to pursue an associates degree, masters degree and even get their doctorate or a certificate, with funding provided by the government.  The requirements are:

• Degree or certification must be pursued through an accredited school;
• You must gain acceptance into school of your choice;
• Simply pick your classes;
• Fill out a Form SF 182, get it signed by your supervisor, then email it to Jamie Deets, management analyst in charge of civilian training aboard base, at: jamie.deets@usmc.mil.  Deets is a management analyst who is in charge of civilian training;
• An email will be sent to you stating that you have been approved to receive funding for the class or classes.
• To receive the funding you must first obtain a grade of “C” for undergraduate studies, a “B” for graduate classes or a “pass” in a pass/fail class.
• Once you submit your transcript to Deets, indicating a passing grade, you will receive funds to pay for the class or classes via electronic deposit made directly to the school (if the school has a deferred payment plan) or it will be transferred to your personal bank account to reimburse you for the class.
• The funding only covers the cost of the class and any fees associated with the class such as lab fees and examination fees.  Books are not covered. “In the grand scheme of things books are a very minor cost compared to the cost of the overall education itself,” said Deets.
• All civilian-students must also sign a Continued Service Agreement to participate in classes.  This means that the employee agrees to stay at Quantico and work for a certain period of time after finishing classes or training (this is calculated using a mathematical formula).  For example, a three credit course would require roughly six weeks of work aboard Quantico after the degree or certification is obtained. Should you elect to take a job somewhere else you would be required to reimburse the government for the full amount paid out in your pursuit of a degree or certification.

Civilian Training Program

This program includes annual training requirements mandated by Headquarters Marine Corps (these can be found on TWMS, Training and Workforce Management System’s self-service) and leadership development training.

Leadership development training offers classes geared toward enriching one’s leadership skills.  This training can include communication skills, conflict resolutions, how to conduct and interview and more.  Deets says he tries to keep the classes to ½ day of training, but some of them may require two to three days to complete. These classes are available roughly once a month, according to Deets.  The class schedule information is typically passed down through the training coordinator of each department or the division’s point of contact.

Call Deets at 703-784-3101 or email him at Jamie.deets@usmc.mil if you have any questions about civilian training.
