The white board hanging on the wall just behind her desk is there less for aesthetic beauty as much as for more practical reasons. Keeping tabs on large sums of money spread over various accounts as the Financial Technician for Food Service Branch Quantico means that April Canty will use every tool at her disposal to make sure the numbers are right and that the Marines she serves are always properly taken care of. It hasn’t always been easy, but Canty, the lone civilian employee among the department’s 17 staff members, has managed to do just that.

Quantico Middle/High School students win award in DOD anti-tobacco video contest

On Jan. 28 three Quantico Middle/High School students were awarded an honorable mention for their anti-tobacco use video by Capt. Kimberly Elenberg, head of the Healthy Base Initiative. In the fall, HBI sponsored a nationwide video contest titled “Fight the Enemy” for teens in an effort “to change attitudes about tobacco by framing tobacco use as the ‘enemy’ that hurts our friends, families, health and fitness,” according to the promotional flyer. After a public voting period and voting by senior Department of Defense and government officials closed, the video by Davion (13), Kwesi (13) and Zane (14) was selected for the award.

Communication is key at Scout Sniper Course

The call came in without warning, alerting the forward communications team at the Sniper Control Center that one of the three operational Marine Scout Sniper teams in the field had been compromised. It was part of a training exercise to conclude the Scout Sniper Unit Leaders Course, but the four Marines braving the chilly Jan. 28 temperatures from the roof of a makeshift three-story building in the training area in the remote west side training area of Marine Corps Base Quantico wasted no time in relaying critical information back to the Surveillance and Reconnaissance Center. A second lieutenant serving as the sniper platoon commander was awaiting further instructions from battalion higher-ups.

Shannon Schuyler says the PwC Charitable Foundation’s recent donation of $1.25 million to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation is but a small token of the gratitude America has for the sacrifice of its service members. “We can’t thank them enough for how they have served us,” said Schuyler, the PwC Charitable Foundation’s principal, corporate responsibility leader and president of PwC Charitable Foundation Inc.
