The first event in Marine Corps Base Quantico’s Energy Awareness Campaign is the Power Down Weekends which starts June 7, 2013.

The campaign aligns with the Commandant’s “Bases to Battlefield” energy strategy and guidance from the Marine Corps Installations Command commander.

“Our bases and stations must become increasingly energy efficient and energy independent to cost effectively perform their critical missions and support Marine Corps readiness,” said Maj. Gen. J. A. Kessler, Marine Corps Installations Command commander, in his Marine Corps Installations Energy Policy Statement. “We will conserve energy and reduce costs, making constrained funds available for both current operations and future warfighting needs.”

Along with helping the base quantify the savings of powering down, the Power Down Weekends will also “increase command awareness about energy use and energy costs while also identifying opportunities to minimize energy waste and energy costs,” Stefanie Kivelin, energy manager, public works branch, Marine Corps Base Quantico, added.

Fifteen buildings, including Activity and Tenant Command buildings, on base will be participating in the Weekend Power Downs.

According to the Power Down Weekend information paper, each Friday in June those in the participating buildings will shut down all non-essential loads such as: computers and monitors. Coffee pots, fans, printers and non-essential appliances are to be unplugged, lights are to be turned off and all doors and windows are to be closed.

Each week appointed representatives will note the electronic meter readings Friday between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. and again on Monday between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.

They will send these in to the resource efficiency manager and the Public Works Branch Energy Team will analyze the energy-use data.

By Thursday the report, which will include information on weekday and weekend use by each participating command, quantifying the cost saving potential, will be sent back to the commands.

“If the Power Down Weekend is an effective way to reduce energy use and costs, we will roll out the program across the base,” Kivelin said.
