The second Headquarters and Service Battalion Quarterly Dodgeball Tournament of 2014 was held at Barber Physical Activity Center on April 30, 2014.

Teams from different units aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico participated, including units that don’t fall under Headquarters and Service Battalion.

“This definitely builds unit cohesion,” said Cpl. Brandon Harris El, a coordinator of the dodgeball tournament. “When you have 24 teams out here, it definitely is a motivation check for Marines.”

There’s more behind the battalion dodgeball tournaments than fun, games and trophies.

“The purpose of it was mainly for the noncommissioned officers,” said Harris El. “Giving the NCOs something that they can call their own and letting them have control over it.”

Every team expressed themselves differently. Some had matching shirts and some wore colorful socks.

“Instead of being cooped up inside all day working, it definitely makes them feel better and I think that a lot of Marines who came out today had a great time,” said Harris El.

In the end, the Purple Cobras team from Marine Corps Air Facility Quantico earned the first place trophy overall. The Marine Corps Combat Development Command finance office team was the Headquarters and Service Battalion winner, and placed second overall.

“In the next quarter look out for purple shirts when you’re here at the dodgeball tournament and bring your anti-venom,” said Staff Sgt. Cole Nason, member of the Purple Cobras team.

The date of the next tournament has not been determined, but is expected to be in July or August.
