The Warriors of Quantico Middle/High School played the Warriors of Saint Michael the Archangel High School from Fredericksburg in basketball at home Monday Jan. 27, 2014. Both teams played with unrelenting defenses throughout the game, with Quantico coming out a little ahead.

By the end of the first half, Quantico had put a little cushion on the scoreboard with a seven point difference. Although Saint Michaels was down they were still keeping Quantico from running away with it, keeping the score at 29-22.

At the start of the second half it seemed that Saint Michael’s was going to close the gap, getting as close as three by scoring six unanswered points.  But Quantico wasn’t going to take that lying down and finally hit two buckets to give them some breathing room.

At the beginning of the fourth period, Quantico was up 44-38. Quantico hit a hot streak scoring more than 20 points in those last minutes, securing the win with a score of 65-52.

Although most of the Quantico team saw playing time, one player stood out as the anchor for the squad. Anthony, a senior, started the game and never came off the court. He racked up a team-leading 14 points. He shot from beyond the three-point line and had six rebounds, three of which he took back up to score immediately.

“Anthony is a good kid,” said Eddie Cottrell, the Quantico Warriors head coach. “He is the leader out on the court and can slow the game down or speed it up, whichever is necessary.”

“Tonight was a fun game,” said Cottrell. “We played hard and so did Saint Michaels. We both had a strong defense and were doing our best to make our shots. They are a great team and it was a fun game to play.”

Cottrell also said that, moving forward, the team has their strategy and game plan down, but everyone has something to work on.

“We have the big stuff,” said Cottrell. “Now we just need to fix it into muscle memory, so we don’t have to think about it. We can just do it.”

The next game will be a conference game against Wakefield Country Day School on Monday at 6 p.m. at Wakefield.
