MCU Town Hall address parking progress

Marine Corps Base Quantico --

An update on a much-needed parking deck was the first order of business for Brig. Gen. Thomas D. Weidley, president of Marine Corps University, during an Aug. 13 Town Hall meeting at Breckinridge Auditorium.

Speaking before a packed room of Marines and civilians alike, Weidley’s news that the new facility would soon be open to relieve the campus’ acute parking shortage came as welcome news to those in attendance, many of whom were forced to park and walk fairly lengthy distances because of the lack of nearby parking.

Always keeping his faculty, students and the rest of the Marine Corps Base Quantico community informed about everything going on was just the idea behind the quarterly meetings, Weidley said. MCU has also been actively using its official website at www.mcu.usmc.mil to further promote events and keep people informed.

"We have to ensure communications," the general said, noting MCU’s many campus locations dispersed around the globe. "We have to make sure we’re passing the same information out so that our people here in Quantico and our people in our other locations have the same information."

Weidley recognized a number of Marines and civilian employees for their ongoing work to MCU prior to speaking of MCU’s major ongoing actions and initiatives, including the upcoming final phase of construction at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and MCU’s solid financial standing as the start of the 2015 Fiscal Year approaches. Budget cuts have slashed programs throughout the entire military, but MCU continues to receive strong financial support from both the Marine Corps and the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, Weidley said.

According to its website, the mission of the Marine Corps University is to develop, deliver and evaluate professional military education and training through resident and non-resident programs to prepare leaders to meet the challenges of the national security environment. MCU also pledges to preserve, promote and display the history and heritage of the Marine Corps.

"Everything we do at the university is geared toward delivering education to our students," Weidley said.
