Miss Virginia, Savannah M. Lane, visited the Marines aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico Dec. 22 as part of her tour of the North Capitol Region.

For more than six months, the crown-holder has made public appearances within the state of Virginia. During the Miss Virginia competition Lane discussed the power of musical therapy and shared her gift of song. She uses music ministry to perform at children’s hospitals, nursing homes and community events.

Lane is no stranger to the military culture and has even given piano lessons to an Iraqi refugee.

“I can see that responsibilities are taken very seriously by each Marine here,” said Lane of the Marines at Helicopter Squadron One during her base tour. “It is impressive what they do every day.”

“From my FBI agent godfather and cadet-sister Hailey Lane, I have learned the value of service to my country,” she said. This includes the Lane’s family history of service, which consists of a great aunt who served in the Women’s Army Corps, an Army veteran grandfather, uncles and cousins that served as Marines and most recently her twin sister is serving as a sophomore cadet at the United States Air Force Academy.

Earlier this year, Lane’s twin sister Hailey went into full cardiac arrest during a physical training event. Her miraculous recovery led the family to promote a national social media campaign titled #We are Hailey Strong.

“I am one of five siblings,” said Lane proudly. “My platform was inspired by my sister who is living with autism. I believe in the healing power of music.”

The 20-year-old college student is currently attending the University of Virginia to study foreign affairs and Middle Eastern studies. Although she was in awe of the military community, her goals include studying law, working with the FBI and eventually running for United States Congress.

“I have a lot of big goals and visiting Quantico and this community certainly helps me redefine my commitment to my country,” she said after visiting the National Marine Corps Museum in Triangle, Virginia.
