Commuters eligible for Guaranteed Ride Home Program

The Guaranteed Ride Home program is now an available for option commuters who find themselves unexpectedly in need of a ride home.

Those who carpool, vanpool, bike, walk or take transit at least twice per week in the metro Washington, D.C., or Baltimore areas can take advantage of a program sponsored by the Northern Virginia Regional Commission that would provide a free lift for as many as four times per year in the event of a personal or family illness, unscheduled overtime or any other unexpected emergency.

“You can get a taxi to take you home or wherever you need to go,” said Peggy Tadej, director of military partnerships, Northern Virginia Regional Commission.

Marine Corps Base Quantico-based commuters must first register with the program. They may do so in person in the Quantico mayor’s office at 337 Fifth Avenue in the town of Quantico or call Juanita Green, customer care manager, Northern Virginia Regional Commission, at 571-414 9534.

For information about the GRH program, visit www.commuterconnections.org/commuters/guaranteed-ride-home.

The GRH program is part of a bigger push between Quantico and NVRC to reduce the number of cars clogging up the highways in the metropolitan Washington, D.C., area. The I-95 corridor in Northern Virginia ranks fourth nationally in use, carrying 231,000 vehicles per day, according to a soon-to-be-signed Memorandum of Agreement between the base and the NVRC. Roughly 48 percent of those cars consist of military or Department of Defense civilian or contract employees traveling to a number of the military facilities in the region, the document says.

The hope is that the GRH program will provide another, more enticing option for those service members and civilian employees who work at military facilities throughout the region.
