Transitioning service members meet with prospective employers

There are resumes, and then there are federal resumes which must be tailored altogether differently if it’s a government job you’re seeking.

That information was among the many helpful tips that Cpl. Nikita Primm, warehouse chief, Headquarters and Service Battalion, took home with her after stopping by Friday’s Job Fair at the Clubs at Quantico and Crossroads Event Center. The hiring event, which was put on by Marine & Family Programs and Transition Readiness, was designed to bring transitioning service members face to face with potential employers.

The goal was the ease the service members’ transition back into civilian life, said Richard Moore, the Personal and Professional Development Program Advisor for Marine Corps Community Services.

“[Those transitioning back into civilian life] have a fear of the unknown,” he said. “What we want to do is break that fear before they transition.”

The Department of Defense, the Department of Justice, Transportation Security Administration, the Virginia State Police, the Prince William County Police and Dominion Power were among the roughly 50 employers represented, with more than 500 potential applicants stopping by during the four-hour event. An earlier hour was set aside for wounded warriors.

The chance to personally meet prospective employers and ask questions was just what Primm had in mind as she prepares for life down the road in a few years.

“I hope to work in the federal government after I get out and these were things I needed to know for a federal resume,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity for when I do get out of the Marine Corps.”

Sgt. Spencer Turner’s 6 ½ -year tenure with the Marine Corps just recently ended. He still has terminal leave remaining, but didn’t want to pass up on a potential opportunity to enter any civilian law enforcement or aviation fields.

He said he welcomed the one-stop stopping the job fair allowed him.

”This gives you an opportunity to see a whole bunch of employers,” Turner said.
