More improvements are on the horizon at the Quantico 50M Pool. The pool will close for the season Sept. 2. However, Lindsay Leach, aquatics director, said they’re already working on new items and renovations that will improve user experience next summer.

The Olympic-sized pool will be outfitted with new ladders, lounge chairs and children’s furniture for the wading pool. The classroom used to teach safety courses will be renovated. There will also be a new “cash shack” at the pool’s entrance. In addition, equipment including water belts, weights and dive bricks, will also be added.

Leach said one of their goals is to increase the amount of equipment to accommodate larger Marine units.

“Right now, we have enough equipment to support smaller groups — 50 or less very easily,” Leach said. “We would like to see more groups of 75 to 100, so we can support bigger battalions, bigger units coming in.”

Additionally, they would like to bolster family participation.

“We’d like to see our swim lessons grow,” Leach said. “We’ve seen a huge influx of families members this year because we added a couple of sessions, which gave families more time options. However, we want to ensure we have enough equipment to continually grow.”

Leach said she is pleased with participation this summer. From Headquarters and Service Battalion’s “Pool Bash” that drew more than 200 Marines to “Flick and Float” movie night that drew 306 families, the pool is becoming an increasing popular attraction aboard the base.

The pool underwent major renovations in 2013, that included a new pool tank, pool liner, locker rooms and lockers. Next season the pool will open on Memorial Day weekend.

In addition to recreational swimming, the pool offers unit PT, swim lessons, lifeguard training and water safety instructor training.
