Two players jumped for the ball in the league’s first tip-off of the year Monday night at the Barber Physical Activity Center, ushering in the new season for the intramural basketball league. The first game of the American League season pitted Marine Helicopter Squadron One vs Monitors Section Promotions Branch. The MSPB won the game 44-34.

The season is set to last into April with the American League playing on Monday and Wednesday nights, and the National League playing on Tuesday and Thursday nights. The number of teams in the league has dropped from 20 teams last year to 18 for this year.

“Even though we lost a few teams from last year, we have a few new teams that have joined this year,” said Robert Anderson, the intramural sports director for the Marine Corps Community Service. “The Training and Education Command, Marine Monitors Section Branch and Combat Camera are all new to the league and we look forward to seeing what they bring to the table.”

The league is comprised of teams from all over the base. Some units have teams that have a full bench, while others have only five players. Although that would seem to be a disadvantage for the smaller teams, in two of the three games on Monday, five-man teams won their games by at least 10 points.

The Air Force Office of Special Investigations team won the final game of the night 50-38 against Officer Candidate School and are preparing for a successful season. Last year they won their first four games but, after some serious injuries, they were unable to repeat that success the rest of the year.

“Last year we had a torn Achilles tendon and an ACL,” said Barry Dosier, the coach for the Air Force team. “This year we look forward to not only a successful team but a healthy one as well.”

In addition to the opening game and the AFOSI vs. OCS game to close the night, the teams from Combat Camera and Marine Corps Intelligence Activity squared off to start their seasons. ComCam was the only team of the night that took full advantage of its full bench to keep players fresh in the game and ended up winning 38-26. Ronald Spotswood led ComCam with 11 points.

“Anything can happen in this league,” said Anderson. “The team that won last year was 1-15 the year before.”
