Their arms trembled as they struggled to bring the dumbbells together for a final repetition.

Strictly Strength, a group exercise held at Barber Physical Activity Center, has become a regular class for some to tone and build muscle. This class is held nine times a week, both mornings and evenings, and it’s available to service members and civilians on base.

“If you’re looking to start off your new year and get a great cardiovascular workout and strength training, it’s one of the easiest ways to do it,” said Delinda Duckett, the group fitness instructor. “You get to do it with other people, which makes it a little easier than trying to do it on your own.”

Some of Duckett’s students agreed with her.

“I know that it’s good for me, and the camaraderie with the ladies is great,” said Carla Aikens, a participant. “We have a good time.”

The class is a total body workout where exercises are done in sets. The workout involves lunges, squats, dead lift, bent over barrel rows, bicep curls, triceps extensions, overhead press and abdominal workouts.

“It’s an overall good class for muscle building and toning,” said Lisa Jones, a participant.

The hour-long class is available Monday and Friday at 9:15 a.m., Tuesday and Thursday at 6 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. and Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

Classes are free to active duty and reservists. Costs for family members, retirees, DOD civilians and contractors along with the schedule can be found at www.quantico.usmc-mccs.org.

“Don’t be afraid to try new things. It’s not as intimidating once you get into it,” said Duckett. “At least try it and you’ll see that you can actually do it.”
