With the shrill of a referee’s whistle, the beginning of the 2013 Marine Corps Base Quantico’s intramural volleyball season was served at the Barber Physical Activities Center gym aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico on May 13, 2013.

Eight teams - six Marine, one Navy and one Air Force- will volley over a series of 98 regular season games for the No. 1 seat. That seat, held by the Marine Corps Systems Command for the past three seasons, will be taken by the team that can successfully set themselves into the end of the playoffs and block their opponents in this quick, rally scored game.

During each game, two teams compete to score 25 points first. Each 25-point interval is called a “match” and the team that scores two matches first, wins the game.

Headquarters and Service Battalion won the first game of the season in two matches against Marine Helicopter Squadron 1 on May 13, 2013, at the Barber Physical Activities Center aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico.

“We have a great team,” said Lauren Fink, coach of the H&S Bn. team. “This is a good start.”

The game was competitive with points scored on both sides. After H&S Bn. beat their opponent in the first match, the HMX-1 Marines showed their team spirit by serving motivational phrases such as, “Game one was just practice” and “Now we’re bringing the heat.”

Despite the positive attitudes of the players, the HMX-1 Marines lost the second match in the initial game of the year.

“I’ve got a good bunch of guys,” said Sgt. William Quinn, captain of the HMX-1 team.

Communication and form are what we will be working on, he said.

H&S Bn. continued their streak beating the Air Force team next; and HMX-1 came back to beat the Air Force in the last game played that night.

Games are played in the gym on Mondays through Thursdays beginning at 6:00 p.m. until the regular season ends on June 13.
