Members of the Marine Corps Archery Team practiced for the Department of Defense Warrior Games on the morning of June 13.

“From a wounded warrior perspective, archery lets them relax and concentrate on what they’re doing, not on other things going around them,” said John Fuller, Marine Corps archery coach for the DOD Warrior Games. “It’s an especially good sport for guys with PTSD and TBI.”

Nine members of the archery team will compete in the 18 meter re-curve and compound bow categories at the Warrior Games on June 22, starting at 8 a.m. at the Lejeune field tent.

Members of the team will practice at the archery range until Saturday.

Constructed by conservation volunteers in 2010, the archery range at Quantico provides a place for Marines and civilians to practice hunting and recreation skills year round.

“It’s popular,” John Rohm, head of the fish, wildlife and agronomy program at Quantico. “We want our hunters to be as good as they can be with their equipment, so we want to provide a place for them to practice so they can be accurate when hunting.”

Located along MCB1, 0.5 miles west of the game check station, the archery range offers practice targets with distances ranging from 20, 30 and 40 yards, as well as a shooting tower.

The busiest time at the range is during hunting season, September through January.

To use the archery range, patrons must possess a Quantico Marine Corps Base hunting or fishing license that can be purchased at the Marine Corps Exchange. A fishing license cost $33 for Virginia residents and $47 for non-residents. A hunting license for small game is $23. Big game licenses are not available at this time.

Patrons must bring their own equipment and only practice arrow tips may be used.

Open year round, Monday to Friday, 11 a.m. to half an hour past sunset; Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to half an hour past sunset.
