New game check station and outdoor gear rental facility coming soon

5 Feb 2015 | Eve A. Baker Marine Corps Base Quantico

Marine Corps Base Quantico’s aging game check facility — built in 1919, before the west side of base existed — has been on the demolition list for several years, according to Natural Resources Manager Tim Stamps. However, it will soon be replaced by a new, modular facility adjacent to the current building.

Sharing the new facility will be an outdoor gear rental operation run by Marine Corps Community Services. Gary Gutshall, the head of Operations and Special Events for MCCS, said the shop will offer rentals of mountain bikes, canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards.

Stamps said a contractor has begun the site preparation work, including grading the area, which is about fifty feet in front of the current building. On the Natural Resources side of the building, there will be office space, a classroom and the game check facility.

Gutshall said the facility will consist of triple-wide trailers in a fenced enclosure to protect the equipment from theft. The rental gear will be a combination of existing gear that is currently being stored near Lunga Reservoir and some newly purchased items. Though the facility is not in a controlled area of the base, only authorized MCCS patrons — military ID card holders — will be able to rent gear.

Operation Adrenaline Rush and Single Marine Program participants will be able to use equipment from the facility for their programs as well.

The facility will function like the rental shops aboard other bases, and patrons will be able to take the gear anywhere they choose, on or off base. According to Gutshall, the facility should be open for business by the summer, though there is not a firm opening date planned at this time.
