Col. David Maxwell, Marine Corps Base Quantico base commander, carries a presidential wreath to the resting place of James Madison, the fourth president of the United States of America. Maxwell was selected by President Barack Obama to present the wreath at Madison's obelisk as part of a tradition of honoring all former commanders-in-chief.

Commander’s Memorial Day guidance, safety message

MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. --

Monday will be set aside as a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service. Formerly known as Decoration Day, communities in America fly their national colors at half mast and commemorate their heroes in ceremonies across the nation. I encourage you to find an opportunity to take part in one of these ceremonies.

This long holiday also marks the start of the 101 Critical Days of Summer; Marine Corps Base personnel will have the opportunity to travel outside the area , dust off their grills, and gather with family and friends in the warmer weather. However, we must plan our activities with safety precautions. We need to be proactive and avoid off-duty accidents during this Memorial Day.

I expect leaders at all levels to conduct thorough pre-holiday safety briefings with their personnel prior to the holiday weekend. Our achievable goal is no accidents, no serious injuries or incidents, no acts of misconduct, and no loss of life during the holiday period. Everyone should be trained in the benefits of risk management, be sure to consider the risks you may take. Ultimately, please encourage your Marines to pause on Monday and reflect on those who, in giving their all, have given us so much.
