International coaches teach soccer camp aboard base

18 Jun 2013 | Pfc. Samuel Ellis Marine Corps Base Quantico

Bouncing a soccer ball in the air from one foot to another, a young man with a strong Irish accent explained some soccer moves to a handful of children between the ages of eight and 14 years old at Butler Stadium aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico on June 18, 2013.

The children were part of a weeklong summer soccer camp hosted by Challenger Sports and run aboard base for Department of Defense employee’s children.

“You get a free shirt and soccer ball,” said Autumn, 11. “Our coaches are really fun, always happy and they teach lots of fun stuff.”

Ranging in ages from 19 to the early 20s, two of the three coaches were from the United Kingdom and one was from Northern Ireland. They travel around the country with Challenger Sports, conducting soccer camps for five to 14 year olds.

“We do this week by week, in different areas of the country, to introduce kids to the fundamentals of the sport, help them develop, give them a good foundation and give them the initiative to want to carry on the sport,” said Matt Foster, camp director from Manchester, England. “I love giving the kids the opportunity to experience a different side of soccer.”

The camp, which ran from June 17-21, provided a half-day camp for five to seven year olds and either half-day or full-day camp for eight to 14 year olds.

“They make new friends and learn the social aspect of the sport, which is really important,” said Foster. “It’s a good, positive experience for the kids.”

Along with learning about the sport of soccer, the children were taught sportsmanship and character traits that benefit them on and off the field.

“We teach them life lessons as well like: respect, sportsmanship, leadership and integrity,” said Foster. “It’s all about having fun with them and making sure they come out with a positive experience”

Calum Mcfarland, first year coach from Port Stewart, Northern Ireland, agrees.

“If the kids are not enjoying it, they won’t progress,” said Mcfarland. “[Coming to this camp], will give your child the week of his life.”

A second soccer camp is scheduled for July 29- August 2. To register, or for more information call the Youth Sports Office at (703) 784-9756 or (703) 432-6238.
