A late-in-the-game, stellar performance by the Maryland School for the Deaf’s Orioles pitcher left the Lady Warriors silently wondering what went wrong.

The 12-10 loss came as a shock to Jose Diaz, Lady Warrior’s coach, whose team was coming into the game with a 2-0 start on the season.

“We felt really good going into the game,” Diaz said. “There were some costly fielding errors that let the game get away from us.”

A combination of solid pitching and good defense lead the Lady Warriors to a 9-2 lead by the end of the second inning.

“It took us a few innings to get settled in,” said Mathis Hediger, Orioles coach. “After that the hits just came and we got back in it.”

In the fourth inning the Lady Warriors lost their drive. Marquis, Lady Warrior’s starting pitcher, lost her fire and was unable to find the strike zone. The rest of the team followed in a display of sloppy performance, with a lack of hitting and poor fielding.

The Orioles took advantage and scored 10 runs in the fourth inning to take the lead, 12-10.

Leading the way for the Orioles comeback was Emily, Oriole’s pitcher. Emily, just like her pitching, was able to place the ball just out of reach from the Lady Warriors. Her performance also included stealing several bases.

“She was really good and never stopped playing,” Diaz said.

The Lady Warriors tried to take back the lead, but Emily’s pitching along with the defensive play of her teammates, kept the Warriors from scoring a run in the final inning.

“They wanted it more,” said Marquis. “We got ahead of ourselves and thought the game was over. We weren’t hustling to the ball and we made a lot of bad throws. “

Diaz said his team was disappointed with the loss. But they’ll continue to improve as the season goes on.

“We have a special group of girls this year,” Diaz added. Because of their dedication he expects this team to have a successful season. “I’m proud of the hard work they put into getting better.”
